The Benefits of a Laptop Computer

Laptop computers are small personal computers designed for using on the move. They usually have all the functions of a desktop computer but are portable space-savers. Today there are more laptops sold in the general PC market than desktop computers so they must have their advantages over traditional PCs. There are many benefits to using a lap top computer – check out just a few of them below.

A laptop computer is completely portable

Portability is often the main advantage of choosing a laptop over a desktop computer. Portability means that a laptop can be used virtually anywhere, not only at home and the office, but also during commuting, in lecture halls, coffee shops, libraries or in meeting rooms to assist with presentations.

You can use your time more efficiently with a laptop

A laptop can be used in places where a desktop PC cant which means you can use your time more productively. For example, office workers can tackle emails during the commute to the office with a laptop at hand and students can work on coursework at the university coffee shop during a break between lectures. If you work from home then a laptop computer allows you to move your office outside on sunny days.

You can gain immediate access to information

Carrying a laptop means having instant access to information, whether it’s from saved files or from the Internet. Immediacy allows better collaboration between co-workers or students, as a laptop computer can be flipped open to find a solution anytime, anywhere. If you are in a meeting and have forgotten an important document you can simply access it from your laptop computer.

Laptops are a manageable size

Laptop computers are smaller than standard PCs which is great when space is at a minimum. When not in use, a laptop can be closed and put away in a small space unlike standard PCs that tend to dominate a large proportion of a room.

Low power consumption

A laptop computer is more power-efficient than a desktop. This is beneficial for businesses (which run hundreds of personal computers, multiplying the potential savings) and homes where there is a computer running constantly. You could even save money on your electricity bill if you choose a laptop computer over a desktop PC.

Peace and quiet

It can be distracting to work at a computer with a droning fan or one that sounds like it’s taking off every time you open a file. A laptop computer is often quieter than a desktop PC, due to better components and less heat production. This means cooling fans can be run at a slower speed and less often, giving you a quieter working environment.

Battery power

A fully charged laptop computer can run for several hours off its internal battery. This is useful for journeys but is also handy if there’s a power cut and you still need to get work done.

A laptop computer is a great investment whether you require a computer for work or for pleasure.

Acer laptops offer the much needed mobility than a regular desktop computer. They have been around for quite some time now, and we could also see that the refurbished laptops market is flourishing as people dont mind buying refurbished laptops rather than going for the new desktop computer.

The latest laptops in India have actually revolutionized the whole process of working. Because of its mobility factor, there is a steep increase in productivity and overall efficiency in the working atmosphere. Today, there are many brands that are doing the rounds in the market. Brands like Acer, Dell, HP, Sony and Toshiba are all coming up with latest technological features to attract the consumers. Before going for their favourite refurbished laptops there are few things the consumers should always take care of.

1) They should always check the date of purchase of the laptop, as it is very important to know the actual date of purchase. Generally, it is seen that hardware becomes obsolete every 5 years, so if you are looking for your favourite brand then make sure that it is not older than 5 years. The ones a little older will probably have obsolete hardware, and will be prone to problems and it may not even support new software.

2) Always make sure that you exactly know the number of times the laptop was sold. Those laptops that have been sold more than twice in their lives have low purchase benefits.

3) It is also important to shop around for the best deal in the market. Online shopping portals have given a wide option in his field. The World Wide Web is flooding with specialized websites that allow you to buy refurbished laptops. But do take care of the authentication. It is important that you buy it from a well known website. Also check whether they are giving any further discounts or accessories along with it.

4) Another most important thing to remember is to try and buy refurbished laptops that come with some type of warranty. If the warranty has expired then you should always look for the vendor who can give you the warranty from his side.

Amidst many brands, the Acer laptops are the ones that are creating ripples in the Indian market. Latest Acer laptops like Ferrari, TravelMate and Aspire are all doing great guns in the laptop industry.

Why is it Necessary to Clean the Windows Registry

Friday, July 18, 2014

Why is it Necessary to Clean the Windows Registry?:
As I discussed in my last post, all of the hardware, software and operating system configuration used by your computer are stored in the windows registry. All of the individual user preferences, profiles, accounts, etc. are also stored in the registry. That is why an problems with the registry can cause problems from an application not working quite right to the entire operating system crashing.

How Do You Know if Something is wrong with the Windows Registry?

Common symptoms of registry problems are:
  • Slow performance
  • Hardware not working correctly or not at all
  • Computer freezes
  • You keep getting windows or application error messages
  • System crashes (the famous blue screen of death)
  • Takes “forever” to boot up
  • Applications not opening or crashing periodically
  • System won’t boot
The windows registry is a hierarchical database and like all databases, it requires routine maintenance such as compacting, correcting file association, removing corrupted entries, removing tombstones and orphans. Let’s look at each of these items individually.
Compacting – process of reclaiming hard disk space used by the database. Basically it is the process of defragging the database to improve efficiency.
Correcting file associations – anytime you install or uninstall something, changes are made to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry hive. Over time there can be a lot of unnecessary or incorrect information stored in this key. Cleaning makes sure that file associations exist only for files that can actually be opened on the machine exist
Corrupted entries – they are just taking up space and are useless and could cause problems if a process tried to use them so they need to be removed
Tombstones – this is data that was written during a specific operation and then marked for deletion during the next compacting or cleaning.
Orphans – are entries that no longer belong to any application or piece of hardware because it no longer exists or in no longer installed on the system

How Do You Clean the Windows Registry?

You could manually edit the registry and remove all of the unnecessary and corrupted data. But unless you are an expert on all of the possible entries in the windows registry, I don’t recommend that you try doing this because if you make a mistake, your operating system may never boot again.
The best way is to use a windows registry cleaner. Registry are software programs written by people who are experts on every possible entry in the registry. These programs will perform all of the necessary maintenance we described above as well as specifically look for damage done by viruses, Trojans and other forms of malware. They will try to repair and/or recover corrupted data if possible. They do this by analyzing your registry entries and comparing then to a set of ‘normalized’ entries. Normalized means that the data is consistent and properly formatted and is a technical term used in databases.
Registry cleaners are a much safer way of doing the routine maintenance on your windows registry.

Where Do You Get Registry Cleaners?

There are two kinds of registry cleaners, commercial and free ones. Here are some of the differences:
Feature FREE Commercial
Quarantine or delete suspected entries Delete Quarantine
Provide technical support NO YES
Offer a FREE scan NO YES
Money Back Guarantee NO YES
Recommendation
Commercial registry cleaners usually do a better job and are safer to use. At least one free registry cleaner is good, but, unless you know a lot about the working registry, use a commercial program.

How to fix hardware problems without taking apart the laptop

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

How to fix hardware problems without taking apart the laptop:
Here’s how you can fix, or to be precise, work around some hardware problem without taking apart the laptop.
1. Network port failure.
In most laptops the network port (aka RJ-45 port) is soldered directly to the motherboard. If for some reason the network port fails (I’m talking about hardware, not software failure), the whole motherboard has to be replaced.
Instead of replacing the motherboard, you can use a PCMCIA network card (aka LAN PC card). You plug this card into the available PC slot in your laptop and get a network port instead.

2. USB ports failure.
Most laptops have a few USB ports available and if one of them stops working, usually it’s not a big deal because you still have two or three working USB ports left. But what if all of them stopped working at once. Let’s say the USB controller on the motherboard went bad and the laptop stopped recognizing any USB device plugged in any USB port. Again, I’m talking about hardware, not software failure. In order to fix this problem you’ll have to replace the motherboard.
Alternatively, you can use a PCMCIA USB card. You plug this card into the PC slot and get two or four USB ports instead. It depends on the type of your PCMCIA card.

3. Internal wireless (Wi-Fi) card failure.
Most newer laptops come with an internal wireless card installed. In some models the wireless card could be easily access through the door on the bottom of the laptop. In other models, the wireless card is buried deep inside the case. What can you do if the internal wireless card fails? You can replace the internal wireless card with another one or use a PCMCIA wireless card instead.

4. Internal flash memory card reader failure.
Most newer laptops come with an internal memory card reader installed. You can plug most known flash memory cards into the slot and access the content right away. Usually the card reader is soldered directly to the motherboard and if it fails, you have to replace the whole motherboard or use it as is.
If you don’t want to replace the motherboard you can use an external USB flash memory card reader. All you have to do is plug the card reader into the available USB port in your laptop and it’s ready to go.

5. Internal CD/DVD drive failure.
You’ll find an internal CD/DVD optical drive in most laptops. If the optical drive fails and stops reading CDs and DVDs, it has to be replaced with a new one. Internal laptop optical drives are not cheap.
Instead of replacing the internal drive, you can use an external USB optical drive. Simply plug this drive into the USB port, let your laptop detect and install the drive and it’s ready for you. Also, you can use this optical drive with any other computer which is very convenient.
