3 Criteria You Must Adopt To Buy A Quality Laptop or Notebook Computer For Mobile Computing
Wednesday, July 23, 2014
Laptops or notebook computers are being built upon technology that is advancing at a rapid speed. While they are getting smaller and smaller, they are considered costly products because there is a limit to how low prices can drop where the technology to build them is improving all the time and hi tech research and development costs money.
Generally, the improvement in laptops have been targeted at narrowing the gaps between what laptops can do and what its closest cousin, the desktop computer can do. In fact, the bulk of developments in laptop technology has been concentrated on not only narrowing the gap between the performance of laptops and the desktop computers, but in some cases it has been to develop laptops that have functions and capacities that far exceed those of desktop computers.
This has led to a newer trend among computer users. Many are opting for laptops rather than the desktop computers as laptops fall in price, narrowing the price difference between a cheaper desktop computer and a laptop.
Together in this fast developing technology, the desktop computer is also trying to find its place in competing with laptops. It is no wonder that we see most desktop computers also shrinking in terms of size for its newer models, with the concept that their smaller footprints will present the same if not better computing power and saving of space and less heat generated.
What would you look out for in your quest to get the best laptop for yourself, seeing that there is so much in common between laptops and desktop computers?
Here are just three important developments that you can adopt in selecting your laptop in differentiating them between the laptop and the desktop computer.
1. The use of dual Core laptops or notebook computers
Dual core systems are considered advanced systems, with dual core chips built by Intel and AMD. Dual core systems allow for fast and heavy graphics computing, and for most purposes will meet your needs for computing speed and also for heavy gaming where realistic graphics are required. They also come with better graphics card such as the ATI Mobility Radeon X800 XT graphics card.
2.Wireless Modem and Cellular Phone Modem
With hot spots being established for wireless connectivity, and where the need to use a cell phone or mobile phone where such hot spots are not available, the feature of a cellular phone modem in a laptop will ensure you can be connected either by wireless modem or by the cellular phone modem. This is very useful for mobile computing.
3. Sufficient Battery Life
Look at the battery life provided with your laptop. As you will be moving around with the laptop, sufficient battery life of 2 hours or more will be reasonable for most cases. You really do not want to find your computing use to be interrupted abruptly when the battery runs out in the middle of an important computing session.
So when you are selecting a laptop for its ease of mobile computing, look at these three features above. Consider the use of fast chips or dual core chips in the laptop, consider the presence of wireless modem and the cellular phone modem and more importantly consider the battery life of the laptop. With these 3 key features, your mobile computing experience should be an enjoyable one.

Why is it Necessary to Clean the Windows Registry
Friday, July 18, 2014
As I discussed in my last post, all of the hardware, software and operating system configuration used by your computer are stored in the windows registry. All of the individual user preferences, profiles, accounts, etc. are also stored in the registry. That is why an problems with the registry can cause problems from an application not working quite right to the entire operating system crashing.
How Do You Know if Something is wrong with the Windows Registry?
Common symptoms of registry problems are:The windows registry is a hierarchical database and like all databases, it requires routine maintenance such as compacting, correcting file association, removing corrupted entries, removing tombstones and orphans. Let’s look at each of these items individually.
- Slow performance
- Hardware not working correctly or not at all
- Computer freezes
- You keep getting windows or application error messages
- System crashes (the famous blue screen of death)
- Takes “forever” to boot up
- Applications not opening or crashing periodically
- System won’t boot
Compacting – process of reclaiming hard disk space used by the database. Basically it is the process of defragging the database to improve efficiency.
Correcting file associations – anytime you install or uninstall something, changes are made to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry hive. Over time there can be a lot of unnecessary or incorrect information stored in this key. Cleaning makes sure that file associations exist only for files that can actually be opened on the machine exist
Corrupted entries – they are just taking up space and are useless and could cause problems if a process tried to use them so they need to be removed
Tombstones – this is data that was written during a specific operation and then marked for deletion during the next compacting or cleaning.
Orphans – are entries that no longer belong to any application or piece of hardware because it no longer exists or in no longer installed on the system
How Do You Clean the Windows Registry?
You could manually edit the registry and remove all of the unnecessary and corrupted data. But unless you are an expert on all of the possible entries in the windows registry, I don’t recommend that you try doing this because if you make a mistake, your operating system may never boot again. The best way is to use a windows registry cleaner. Registry are software programs written by people who are experts on every possible entry in the registry. These programs will perform all of the necessary maintenance we described above as well as specifically look for damage done by viruses, Trojans and other forms of malware. They will try to repair and/or recover corrupted data if possible. They do this by analyzing your registry entries and comparing then to a set of ‘normalized’ entries. Normalized means that the data is consistent and properly formatted and is a technical term used in databases.
Registry cleaners are a much safer way of doing the routine maintenance on your windows registry.
Where Do You Get Registry Cleaners?
There are two kinds of registry cleaners, commercial and free ones. Here are some of the differences:| Feature | FREE | Commercial |
| Quarantine or delete suspected entries | Delete | Quarantine |
| Provide technical support | NO | YES |
| Offer a FREE scan | NO | YES |
| Money Back Guarantee | NO | YES |
Commercial registry cleaners usually do a better job and are safer to use. At least one free registry cleaner is good, but, unless you know a lot about the working registry, use a commercial program.

How to reinstall factory operating system on different laptops
Thursday, July 17, 2014
In this post I explain how to reinstall factory operating system on different laptops. This should work for most laptops running Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating systems.
This could be useful if your operating system stopped working properly, got corrupted or infected with a virus.
WARNING! Running system restore utility will erase all personal data on the hard drive and re-image it back to factory defaults. Make sure all personal data is backed up before reinstalling the operating system. Also, make sure the laptop is running on AC adapter power during the recovery process.
These days most laptops are sold without recovery discs. Instead they have a hidden (or visible) recovery partition with the factory image. In order to re-image the hard drive back to factory defaults it’s necessary to initiate the recovery wizard and it’s very similar for many different laptop brands.
As an example I’ll show step-by-step operating system re-installation process on HP laptops.
Again, it will be the same or very similar for other laptop brands.
STEP 1.How to start Recovery Manager on HP laptops.
Turn on the laptop and press the F8 key when HP (or any other brand) logo appears on the screen.
STEP 2.
On the next screen you should see Advanced Boot Options.
If for some reason you don’t get this screen, restart the laptop and press on the F8 key again.
From all available options select the very first line: Repair Your Computer and press on the Enter key.
STEP 3.
This should take you to the System Recovery Options.
Select available language and keyboard layout. Press on the next button.
STEP 4.
On the next screen select your user name (must be user with administrative rights) from the drop down menu.
Enter the user password and press the OK button.
STEP 5.
This will take you to the next System Recovery Options window.
The last option will be HP Recovery Manager. Click on it.
STEP 6.
This will take you to the next window: HP Recovery Manager.
There are many different options here and one of them – System Recovery (Restore your computer to its original factory conditions).
Select this option and follow the instructions on the screen.
In order to start Toshiba Recovery Wizard you follow STEPS 1-5.How to start Recovery Wizard on Toshiba laptops.
This will bring you to the same System Recovery Options with Toshiba Recovery Wizard at the end.
Click on the Toshiba Recovery Wizard button.
On the next scree you’ll see Toshiba warning about data deletion. Click the next button.
In the next Toshiba Recovery Wizard window you can select Recover to out-of-box state option.
Click on the next button and follow instructions.
Here’s another example. Now it’s for Dell laptops. How to start Backup and Recovery Manager on Dell laptops.
Again, follow steps 1-5 and on the System Recovery Options select the very last option: Dell Backup and Recovery Managers.
This will take you to the next window where you can start the operating system re-installation process. Follow the instructions.
How To Make Your PC Ready for Blu Ray
Now that the war is over, many PC owners want to add Blu-ray capability to their PCs. If you are running Windows 7 or Mac OS/X, you are all ready to add Blu-ray since both of those operating systems support Blu-ray.
First Decision
Even if your operating system supports Blu-ray, your hardware may not. The Blu-ray drive uses SATA to connect to your motherboard. The important thing to check is to see if your graphics card and monitor are HDCP compliant. HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection created by Intel to prevent pirating while the content is dent over DVI or HDMI connections between a source and a receiver. So if either your graphics (the source) or your monitor (the receiver) fails the HDCP test, you will still get a signal but it won’t be high definition and you will have wasted your money.
Second Decision
If your hardware supports Blu-ray, then your second decision is whether to buy a Blu-ray player or a burner. Players are cheaper but only let your play the disks. Burner will give you the ability to create all varieties of Blu-ray, DVD and CD disks including dual layer disks. With 25GB storage on a single layer disk and 50 GB on a dual layer disk, the storage capacity is inviting. At the moment, single layer disks run around $3 each and dual layer disks around $10 each.Third Decision
You will also need software to run your Blu-ray player or burner. Both Windows 7 and the Mac OS/X have built in software capable of Blu-ray playback. However, for burning or ripping, you will most likely want to purchase a commercial application like Cyberlink’s Power DVD Ultra or Nero.Recommendation
If your hardware supports Blu-ray but your operating system doesn’t, you really should consider upgrading to Windows 7 or Max OS/X. I did read about some tweaked drivers available for Windows XP, but no one seems to be having much luck getting them to work right. How to fix hardware problems without taking apart the laptop
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Here’s how you can fix, or to be precise, work around some hardware problem without taking apart the laptop.
1. Network port failure.
In most laptops the network port (aka RJ-45 port) is soldered directly to the motherboard. If for some reason the network port fails (I’m talking about hardware, not software failure), the whole motherboard has to be replaced.
Instead of replacing the motherboard, you can use a PCMCIA network card (aka LAN PC card). You plug this card into the available PC slot in your laptop and get a network port instead.
2. USB ports failure.
Most laptops have a few USB ports available and if one of them stops working, usually it’s not a big deal because you still have two or three working USB ports left. But what if all of them stopped working at once. Let’s say the USB controller on the motherboard went bad and the laptop stopped recognizing any USB device plugged in any USB port. Again, I’m talking about hardware, not software failure. In order to fix this problem you’ll have to replace the motherboard.
Alternatively, you can use a PCMCIA USB card. You plug this card into the PC slot and get two or four USB ports instead. It depends on the type of your PCMCIA card.
3. Internal wireless (Wi-Fi) card failure.
Most newer laptops come with an internal wireless card installed. In some models the wireless card could be easily access through the door on the bottom of the laptop. In other models, the wireless card is buried deep inside the case. What can you do if the internal wireless card fails? You can replace the internal wireless card with another one or use a PCMCIA wireless card instead.
4. Internal flash memory card reader failure.
Most newer laptops come with an internal memory card reader installed. You can plug most known flash memory cards into the slot and access the content right away. Usually the card reader is soldered directly to the motherboard and if it fails, you have to replace the whole motherboard or use it as is.
If you don’t want to replace the motherboard you can use an external USB flash memory card reader. All you have to do is plug the card reader into the available USB port in your laptop and it’s ready to go.
5. Internal CD/DVD drive failure.
You’ll find an internal CD/DVD optical drive in most laptops. If the optical drive fails and stops reading CDs and DVDs, it has to be replaced with a new one. Internal laptop optical drives are not cheap.
Instead of replacing the internal drive, you can use an external USB optical drive. Simply plug this drive into the USB port, let your laptop detect and install the drive and it’s ready for you. Also, you can use this optical drive with any other computer which is very convenient.
